Miami, May 23, 2022 – Miami Dade College’s (MDC) Virtual Food Truck Entrepreneurship Program will award 150 Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS) students with certificates of completion during a ceremony at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 26. Launched this spring, this program helps students become entrepreneurs by learning how to create a food truck concept.

During the seven-week Virtual Food Truck Entrepreneurship Program, M-DCPS students received virtual instruction in food safety and sanitation, business operations, marketing, customer service, employability skills, motivation, and more from Miami Hospitality Center instructors. At the ceremony, students will showcase their Food Truck projects and concepts, including menus, logos, truck design, and marketing plan. In addition to completing the course, students will receive the Florida Safe Staff Food Handler’s Certificate from the Florida Restaurant Lodging Association.

The Virtual Food Truck Entrepreneurship Program is a collaborative project between MDC and M-DCPS, which was awarded an Entrepreneurship Education Training Grant by the Florida Department of Education. M-DCPS created the initiative to support the school district’s efforts in preparing students to be future ready by cultivating an entrepreneurial mindset and capabilities. The schools participating in this project represented K – 8, Middle and Senior High Schools. The students celebrated in this ceremony come from these M-DCPS schools: Booker T. Washington Senior High School, Henry E.S. Reeves K-8, Jose de Diego Middle School, North Miami Senior High School and Southwest Miami Senior High School.

The Hospitality Institute is a program of the Miami Hospitality Center at MDC. The Hospitality Institute was established to connect Miami’s low-income residents to job opportunities in the local hospitality and tourism industry. It offers hands-on hospitality, culinary, job readiness and customer service training completely free of charge. Since its inception in 2008, The Hospitality Institute has graduated several thousand participants and assisted them in finding sustainable employment. The Hospitality Institute’s office is located at MDC Wolfson Campus and trainings are delivered at various sites throughout Miami-Dade County.
